Pune Tree of the Year
Pune Tree of the Year is a citizen-led initiative that recognises remarkable trees for their ecological value, cultural importance, beauty and the stories they carry. The 2026 nomination period closes on 30 September. Shortlisted trees will be published on 15 October, followed by public voting until 15 December. Results will be announced by 31 December 2026.
About the initiative
Trees are more than part of Pune's landscape. They cool neighbourhoods, support birds and insects, improve air quality, store carbon and create places where communities gather.
This initiative invites residents to discover, document and celebrate exceptional trees across Pune, from old heritage trees and neighbourhood landmarks to trees with unusual forms, histories or ecological value.
Our mission
By sharing tree stories and inviting public participation, we aim to strengthen the connection between people and Pune's urban forest.
Help citizens notice and document remarkable trees around them.
Recognise trees that enrich Pune's ecology, identity and heritage.
Share reliable information about species, habitats and tree care.
Encourage long-term care for significant trees and green spaces.
How it works
Residents contribute the stories. A transparent process helps identify and celebrate Pune's most remarkable trees.
Submit a tree, its location, photographs and the story behind it.
Nominations are checked for completeness and shortlisted.
Citizens learn about the shortlisted trees and cast their vote.
The selected tree and all finalists are celebrated through stories.
Our approach
Anyone should be able to contribute a tree story or take part.
Recognition should never encourage damage, disturbance or unsafe visits.
Species, location and heritage details should be verified where possible.
Celebration should lead to greater care for trees and their surroundings.
